Um, yes please! This stuff is amazing.
Homemade banana ice cream is one of my favorite super easy healthy treats to make. We’re talking 5-ingredient easy for this recipe. It’s vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, & refined sugar-free…clearly a very clean and healthy treat for you.
The two main ingredients are bananas and cacao powder.
As I’m sure you already know, bananas are great for you. They aid in weight loss, are great to eat before a workout, can help improve mood and overcome depression, aid digestion, assist in absorbing nutrients, build strong bones, can make you more alert, and the list goes on.
Raw cacao powder is a staple in my kitchen at all times. It’s high in antioxidants, high in minerals like magnesium, zinc, iron & chromium, is great for your beautiful little heart, and…it’s raw chocolate…enough said.
What you need:
- 1.5-2 frozen bananas
- A touch of unsweetened almond milk – just enough to get the ingredients mixing
- 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- optional: add in some cinnamon
- top with cacao nibs for sprinkles
Extra note : Before freezing your bananas, make sure to peel them first. {My cute mama was so proud she froze bananas for her smoothies, and when she showed me, they weren’t peeled first…which doesn’t quite work:) No judgement though, because I’ve done the same thing before when I didn’t know!} After peeling them, I usually break them up into 3 or 4 pieces to make blending a bit easier and then freeze them in a Ziploc baggie or freezer-safe glass. Also, it’s ideal to freeze bananas once they begin turning brown or become brown spotted, they are sweeter!
What to do:
Mix all ingredients, except for the cacao nibs, in a high-powered blender {I use my Vitamix}. Again, just add a touch of almond milk only to help with the blending process. You can also use a food processor. Next, sprinkle with delicious and crunchy cacao nibs. That’s it! Then…ENJOY.

I love this recipe! I’ve made it without the cacao as well if you want more of a “vanilla” version. I just add more cinnamon, and it’s so good! So easy and perfect for the summertime. My husband and I are obsessed with frozen bananas. We keep a stocked container in our freezer at all times to use for smoothies. 🙂 Thanks for sharing Kara!
